Overview of Chapter 4

Revelation Chapter 4. Main Points

Revelation Chapter 4 shifts the scene from the churches on earth to the throne room of heaven. John sees an open door in heaven and hears a voice like a trumpet saying:

“Come up here, and I will show you what must take place after this.”
— Revelation 4:1

Immediately John is “in the Spirit” and sees a magnificent throne with One seated upon it. The central message of the chapter is clear: God is on the throne and He is sovereign over all creation.

1. The Throne of God

John describes the One on the throne as having the appearance of precious stones—jasper and carnelian. A rainbow resembling an emerald surrounds the throne. Lightning, thunder and voices come from it, showing God’s majesty, holiness and power.

2. The Twenty-Four Elders

Around God’s throne are twenty-four other thrones, with twenty-four elders seated upon them. They are dressed in white and wear golden crowns. These elders appear to represent God’s redeemed people and continually worship Him.

3. The Seven Lamps

Before the throne are seven blazing lamps, described as the seven spirits of God. This symbolizes the fullness and perfection of the Holy Spirit.

4. The Sea of Glass

In front of the throne is something resembling a sea of glass, clear as crystal. It adds to the picture of heavenly glory, purity and majesty.

5. The Four Living Creatures

Around the throne are four living creatures covered with eyes:

  • One like a lion
  • One like an ox
  • One with a face like a man
  • One like a flying eagle

Each has six wings. Day and night they never stop declaring:

“Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty, who was, and is, and is to come.”

Their worship emphasizes the eternal holiness of God.

6. The Elders Worship

Whenever the living creatures give glory to God, the twenty-four elders fall before Him. They lay their crowns before the throne and proclaim:

“You are worthy, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power.”

Why is God worthy?

Because He created all things, and by His will they exist.

Main Message of Revelation 4

Revelation 4 reminds us that no matter what happens on earth, God remains on His throne. Heaven is not confused, frightened or out of control. God is holy, eternal, powerful and worthy of worship.

Before Revelation describes the judgments and events that follow, John is first shown the throne. This is important: everything that happens afterward takes place under the authority of the One who sits upon the throne.

Key Thought

Before looking at the troubles of the world, look toward the throne of God. He is still in control.
