Darkness Over The Earth

I am a Christian, however; there are events in scripture that I try and investigate. One of those events pertains to, the darkness over the earth, that occurred when Jesus was crucified. There was darkness for 3 hours.
Please scroll down to visit links leading to a detailed explanation of the three hours of darkness.
I believe in creation.
The following are scripture readings of the creation story, up to the creation of the light. and the crucifixion story.
Genesis 1: In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.
2. And the earth was without form, and void, and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.
3. And God said let there be light; and there was light.
4. And God saw the light, that it was good, and God divided the light from the darkness.
5. And God called the light Day, and the darkness He called Night, And the evening and the morning were the first day.
6. And God said let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters.
7. And God made the firmament. and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament, and it was so.
8. And God called the firmament Heaven, And the evening and the morning were the second day.
9. And God said let the waters under the heaven be gathered together unto one place, and let the dry land appear and it was so.
10. And God called the dry land Earth, and the gathering together of the waters called he Seas and God saw that it was good.
11. And God said let the earth bring forth grass, the herb yielding seed and the fruit tree yielding fruit after after his kind, whose seed is in itself, after his kind and God saw that it was good.
12. And the earth brought forth grass and the herb yielding seed after his kind, and the tree yielding fruit, whose seed was in itself, after his kind; and God saw that it was good.
13. And the evening and the morning were the third day.
14. And God said let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night, and let them be for signs and for seasons and for days, and years.
15. And let them be for lights in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth; and it was so.
16. And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night, he made the stars also.
17. And God set them in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth,
18. And to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness; and God saw that it was good.
19. And the evening and the morning were the fourth day.

St Matthew Chapter 27

Verse 45: Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land until the ninth hour.
Verse 46: And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice saying, ? Eli,Eli, Lama Sabachthani? That is to say, My God, my God why hast thou forsaken me?
Verse 50: Jesus when he had cried again with a loud voice, yielded up the ghost.

St Mark Chapter 15

And when the sixth hour was come, there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour.

St. Lukes Gospel

Chapter 23: 44-46.  And it was about the sixth hour and there was a darkness over all the earth, until the ninth hour.
And the sun was darkened and the veil of the temple was rent to the midst.
And when Jesus had cried with a loud voice, he said, Father into thy hands, I commend my spirit; and having said thus, he gave up the ghost.
I believe  there was darkness over the earth. God, who I believe created the light can turn it on and off at his beckoning.

  1. Well, if we’re Christians, we would’ve learned that before the Crucifixion, Jesus agonized over this ‘cup’, by asking the Father in Heaven to take this cup from Him if it were His will (see Mark 14:36). This cup caused Jesus great agony, for the cup was spiritually filled with impurity – my sins, your sins, the world’s sins that He/Jesus was about to take upon Himself. Thus, since the Father in Heaven could not (cannot) tolerate sin (for He is Holy), He separated Himself/His Glory from His Son on the Cross at that moment, it bringing total darkness. There we see that Christ cried out to the Father, for He knew the Father/God had turned His face – entire Glory – from Him. By the way, did you know if any of us are in sin, God cannot yield His Face/Presence upon our prayers? See Isaiah 59:2. Sin in itself is darkness; separating God from anyone who is sinful. It isn’t that He doesn’t want to; it’s because He CAN’T (due to His Holiness, He isn’t able to tolerate it/sin). Thus, He wants all to come to Him by receiving His Son, Jesus, Who can remove (cleanse) those sins thru His shed Blood, and all be reconciled to God (John 3:16; John 14:6). I hope this helps in explaining why darkness fell during Christ’s Crucifixion.

    1. Thank you for your comment. It is appreciated. My concern is for those who, do not take time to read and study God’s word. Trusting that The Holy Spirit will convict those who take time to read what I have posted. Jesus said, “And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment:”

      Thank You
